Peter Merrick Date of Death: December 3, 2001


Peter “Pete” Merrick 75 of Toronto, OH, well known and respected horseman, died Monday December 3, 2001 at Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville, OH. Peter was born in Steubenville, Ohio on August 18, 1926 the son of the late George and Rose Nemeth Merrick. He was preceeded in death by his brother Joseph Merrick. A graduate of Michigan State and an Army veteran of WWII, Peter retired from Guy Johnston Lumber and Construction Company in Steubenville as a Vice President and Manager of Retail Sales. A lifelong bachelor, the love of Peter’s life has always been directed to his family and his horses. He was a successful breeder of show horses and was always ready and willing to share his knowledge and experience with others. Peter was a founding member of the Steubenville Saddle Club and served continuously as an officer. He was also a long time member and officer of the Interstate Horse Show Assn. and was recently re-elected Vice President. In 1999, he was honored by the organization as the “Interstate Horseman of the Year”. Peter’s other memberships include Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church; Pilgrim Lodge 691 F & AM; Scottish Rite Valley of Steubenville; Steubenville Elks Lodge 231; The American Saddlebred Museum and American Saddlebred Horse Assn. He is survived by his sister Mildred “Mitzie” (Blair) Hennessey of St. Petersburg, FL; nephew Dr. Curtis (Lynnette) Hennessey of Hilton Head Island, SC; niece Nina (Ray) Hennessey- Marchica and three grandnieces and one grandnephew. Friends may call at Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio on Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Rade Merick officiating. Burial at Union Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio. Pomen services 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Resurrection Church or the American Cancer Society.
