Welcome to the memorial page for

Beverly Joyce Haverfield

August 25, 1938 ~ May 22, 2017 (age 78) 78 Years Old

Beverly Joyce Haverfield, 77, loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and cherished friend, died peacefully on May 22nd, 2017, at the historic Union Printers Home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  She was nearly a life long resident of Steubenville, Ohio, where she was born to Elizabeth J. Phillips nee Binger and John W. Phillips on August 25th, 1938.  She joined Second United Presbyterian Church, now Covenant Church, as a teen, and remained a steadfast member during her life. Beverly graduated from Steubenville High School in the class of 1956, and following that worked in the offices of the Municipal Court where she became the personal secretary to Judge Lawrence Sedgwick.

Beverly married Richard “Dick” Haverfield on June 27th, 1959, and she devoted her life to him and their two children, Beth Lynn and Richard.  Following the birth of Richard, a special needs newborn with mental retardation and cerebral palsy, her life took a new and unforeseen direction.  Together, Beverly and Dick vowed to do whatever was in their power to make their new son’s life full and rewarding!  Under their constant nurturing and love he thrived.  They chose not to place him in an institution, as had been medically advised.  Instead, they brought him home and were his champions-becoming incredible parents, as well as physical and occupational therapists and special education teachers.  This passion contributed to what is now the Jefferson County Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Program, and includes the School of Bright Promise, JeffCo Workshop, JeffCo Training Center and Shaffer Plaza.  Without doubt, Beverly’s greatest contribution during her life was not only mother to Beth and Rich, but a tireless and life long caregiver and guardian to Rich, as well.

Despite the challenges of caring for a handicapped child, Beverly, with her family, travelled, camped, vacationed-usually at a beach, attended Big Red football games and Post 33 Legion baseball games, county fairs, festivals, and the Ohio State Fair.  She sang, baked, cleaned, swam, danced, decorated, gardened, enjoyed card games, did the occasional headstand-just because…and entertained family and friends endlessly!  She eagerly served on many Class Reunion committees, and attended the reunions almost without fail.  Her friendships with many of these classmates remain to this day.  Her faith, family and friends were the hallmarks of her life.

Beverly is preceded in death by her mother and father, Elizabeth J. Little and John W. Phillips, by her husband, Richard M. Haverfield, her son, Richard M. Haverfield, Jr., her son-in-law, John B. Martin, as well as her brother, Matthew T. Phillips “Chick”.  She is survived by her daughter, Beth Lynn Martin (nee Haverfield), her brother, John W. Phillips, Jr., her sisters, Rena M. Noble (nee Phillips), and Janice D. Monroe (nee Phillips), as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

A Memorial Service to honor Beverly’s life will take place at Dunlope Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio, on her birthday, August 25th, 2017, at 10:00am with luncheon to follow at Shorac Family Center.
